I have been drawing and painting horses for as long as I can remember. I started drawing horses as a very young child primarily because my parents were very poor and could not afford to buy a horse for me. The fantasy of having a horse of my own was partially satisfied by creating a horse for myself on paper.
After literally giving away my artwork for years, I recently decided to attempt to try to sell my artwork after checking out other artists' work and what they charge for it. My goal is to always have fun doing my artwork, I never want it to be WORK, i.e., something I have to do for a living. So, I plan to continue working at my day job as a paralegal and do some artwork on the side, just enough to make life interesting.
I am essentially self-taught although I broadened my horizons in the past few years by taking a couple of local community education classes in drawing and watercolor. I believe this was the first time in my life I was ever shown any particular methods. My art teachers in high school just let me be and while I always received the top grade, I never really learned anything. I did not go for a degree in fine arts in college as I chose to pursue education that would land me a job that would keep a roof over my head. J
Over the past couple of years,
I have somehow managed to find the time to get back into my art. In
between working full-time as a paralegal and training and showing my horse,
Bubba, I have managed to get a few paintings done (wow!). Since
I continue to work full-time as a paralegal at a law firm in downtown
Portland, Oregon, I have limited time available to do commissions. (For
details on commissioned work, please go to the
Commissions
page.)
Addendum: I was recently able to return to my home town of Austin, Texas, where I got a digital photo of the painting, "Foot Doctor" which appears on my home page. I did this painting when I was 18 years old and while finishing my last semester of high school. My mother "claimed" this painting as soon as the paint was dry and I agreed to let her keep it as long as she promised not to "claim" any of my future paintings. Both parties have kept to that agreement to this day. J |
